Discover how Genome Detective insights make a real difference to people's health across diverse settings

Impact 1

Rapid outbreak tracking

Genomic classification of COVID-19 has been essential for tracking the emergence and global spread of variants. By accurate reassembly of the viral sequence, and organizing viral sequences into lineages, Genome Detective enables real-time surveillance, supports public health responses, and helps assess the impact of mutations on transmission and immunity.

At Stellenbosch University, Genome Detective was used to discover the Beta and Omicron variants early during the pandemic.

Lab-developed tests under ISO 15189 accreditation

Genome Detective embeds validated analytical workflows within an accessible, browser-based platform. Genome Detective is for Research Use Only, but its consistent, standardized, and reliable bioinformatics workflows enable laboratories to perform routine analyses as lab-developed tests under ISO 15189 accreditation. The bio-informatics runs autonomously and efficiently. This frees specialists to focus on more complex pathogens and higher-value interpretation.

“Genome Detective combines ease of use with high analytical quality, delivering reliable results without requiring bioinformatics expertise. Its transparent data and accuracy give us confidence for consistent and trustworthy decision-making in routine microbiology.”

Impact 3

Evolving pathogen genomics platform

Genome Detective has become an essential tool in our genomic surveillance and outbreak response activities. Its accuracy, speed, and intuitive interface allow us to rapidly analyze sequencing data and generate reliable results that support timely public health decision-making.

The platform has played a key role in several high-impact events in Argentina, including the genomic characterization of the Western Equine Encephalitis virus, which re-emerged after more than 40 years; the identification of the ECSA genotype of the chikungunya virus, introduced in 2023; and the detection of the introduction and replacement of dengue virus serotype 2 by the Cosmopolitan genotype, now predominant in the Americas.

The reliability and continuous development of Genome Detective give us strong confidence in our results. It is now fully integrated into our workflow and significantly strengthens our capacity to respond to emerging and re-emerging viral agents.
